Gretchen & Patrick's wedding really took me by surprise. Not the joy in their faces at finally being married, the sweet kindness of their families, or the elegance of the details—no: just the fact that it was happening!

As you might be able to tell from the below invitation (expertly edited by Gretchen!), they were originally slated to get married last April. You know, about two weeks after COVID lockdowns started. Postponing their wedding caused them immense heartache amidst an already difficult year: family members experience health problems, family members lost to COVID, pivoting to online school (Gretchen is a teacher)...I had more than one conversation with Gretchen in which she expressed that she couldn't face trying to replan their wedding.

Until! Until...the school year was about to begin, everyone in their immediate families was vaccinated who could be, and Gretchen decided that she just wanted to start the new year as Mrs. Cox, darn it! With about two and a half weeks notice, their wedding team made an intimate wedding for just Gretchen & Patrick's immediate families come to life—and these two are so loving, sweet, genuine, and kind, that I think I speak for more than just myself when I say we were truly happy to do it.

Midday rain pushed an expected outdoor ceremony indoors, but these two were so happy to be getting married that not a thing in the world could phase them. Patrick's father is a minister, and the plan all along was for him to marry them, adding an extra personal touch to the ceremony. The rain had abated by the end of the ceremony, and we were able to take Gretchen's gorgeous lace dress, Patrick's custom tux, and their sweet smiles outdoors for some portraits around the Carolina Inn's beautiful exterior.

Even on short notice, these two were able to incorporate some additional personal elements: Gretchen's family lost her Grammy to COVID, and Gretchen wore Grammy's sapphire ring down the aisle, as well as carrying her Grandpa's handkerchief. Patrick wore a delightfully unique pair of Ralph Lauren slippers with which he was slightly obsessed. Being at the Carolina Inn was itself an homage to their UNC alumni status. They shared a first dance, danced with their parents, and reveled in finally getting to start their marriage.

I am so truly happy to have been able to be there to document Gretchen & Patrick's wedding. Enjoy a selection of my favorites from the day, and wish them all the joy and happiness in the world in the comments below!
