Ian & Lucy | Elegant Intimate Wedding at 21C Museum Hotel in Durham

When you walk into the suite where the bride and her entourage are getting ready, ask where she is, and hear from the next room, "The bride is serving right now!", and when, upon heading further in, find the bride in a pink-boa-edged caftan robe, bombshell curls cascading around her shoulders and the window light glowing off her skin...well, it sets a tone. It certainly prepared me for a day that was both fierce and fiercely fun.

Ian & Lucy themselves are such a delight. When we first met, we were astonished to discover that we had a significant piece of history in common: Ian is from the Northeast, and taught for a number of years in the same city where Mike & I got married, and the two of them lived for a time in the town where I grew up. It's a very small town (~2000 residents), so this is highly unusual, but incredibly delightful.

So here's the combination: you have fierce looks, hometown energy, and some perfectly personal choices: the Vault at 21C, where Ian & Lucy had their First Look, was also where they had their first date; their ceremony was officiated by Ian's friend and former mentor; their wedding cake was created for them by one of Lucy's bridesmaids, who is a professional cake artist (and has competed on the Food Network!); Ian's wedding ring is his grandfather's. Not much strikes my sentimental little heartstrings stronger than deep personal connections, but my aesthetic senses go equally wild for many of the design and decor choices these guys made: lush florals on their chuppah, bold tulips in bud vases, and, of course, Lucy's gorgeous structured taffeta ball gown.

This was a sweet and gorgeous wedding that I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to participate in, and I feel wholly honored to have been present to witness Ian & Lucy become husband and wife. I wish them every imaginable joy that a long a happy marriage and a lifetime of love have to bring them, and hope you will do so as well as you scroll through a selection of my favorite images from the day below!
