I feel, increasingly, that the only place to be truly safe from COVID-19 is atop a mountain. Fortunately, atop a mountain is exactly where Katie & Ja decided to get married! They've been planning their Asheville elopement since early spring, and the same twist of fate that caused them to postpone it from April until June also allowed me to be there to photograph it for them—which I was thrilled to do!

These two are nerds after my own heart: every time I've seen them, Ja has updated me on the progress of his "nerd room," which now boasts an impressive Anakin Skywalker wall; don't miss his Darth Vader bracelet and Superman belt buckle, either. Katie quoted Taylor Swift in her vows, and the whole soul of their elopement plan—helped along by the excellent team at Elope Asheville—was a.) just being married already! and b.) keeping their connection intimate, their promises for each other and the wind.

After a quick first look at the stylish AC Marriott in downtown Asheville, we headed up the breathtaking twists and turns of the Blue Ridge Parkway to the stunning Buck Spring Gap Overlook, where Katie & Ja exchanged promises and rings at the precipice of the world. Trails and confusing old edifices and mountain views and big sky, oh my! It started to sprinkle as we were nearing the end of our time, and their last portraits sheltered from the rain by a spreading branch are some of my favorites.

Let me take a tiny soapbox moment now, too, to say: As a wedding photographer who believes deeply in the institution of marriage itself far beyond just the wedding day, elopements and other intimate ceremonies, celebrations, and solemnizations are absolutely the way to go. First of all, many of our couples are expressing that, while postponing (or, worse, cancelling entirely) their big wedding celebrations due to COVID is a huge bummer, an even greater disappointment is imagining not being married to their partner for another whole year or more. Your wedding is a huge deal—it requires months of meticulous planning, the excitement ramp-up is enormous, and it is expensive. Ten years removed from my wedding day, trust me, please: your marriage, the life you create with your partner, the promises you solemnize through your every daily action, are a much bigger deal. Your partner and your marriage will ground you, shore you up, carry you through where nothing else can.

Second of all, there is no better way to protect yourselves and your loved ones from COVID than simply staying apart. YES, it sucks hugely; yes, your families and friends will be disappointed not to be present for your marriage ceremony. Yes—this is all incredibly hard. Film it, stream it, re-enact it, over-dramatize it; allow your families and friends to witness in some way, but from far, far away is unquestionably the safest option right now.

Okay! Jumping off my soapbox to bring it back around to Katie & Ja! We are planning on celebrating their marriage in the back yard of their brand new home in this fall, and I can't wait to document that event for them as they share their joy with their families and friends. Until that time, enjoy a selection of my favorites from their elopement day, and congratulate them on their marriage in the comments below!
