Jesse & Jean-Paul | A Casual Summer Wedding Celebration at The Pit in Durham, NC

Planning your wedding from afar is challenging enough; planning in a different time zone—in Jean-Paul & Jesse's case, from the Pacific Northwest for their Durham, NC wedding—just adds to the difficulty level. You need to either hire an excellent coordinator or be super on the ball. Jean-Paul & Jesse were the latter. When I met with them on Monday of the week they were getting married, they knew exactly how they wanted the entire day to go: they talked me through who would be where and when, how the entire ceremony was going to go and the reasoning—both practical and sentimental—behind it all, and were just so thoroughly delightful and delighted in the entire plan for their wedding day.
The main plan? Family, friends, fun. Jean-Paul & Jesse's families are the definition of blended: all bioparents divorced, all repartnered, and all get along swimmingly with all the kids, all the aunts and uncles, and each other. The day was hot and bright, but the rooftop event space at The Pit has an air-conditioned dining room, and Jesse & Jean-Paul's guests were in and out of the AC all night. Their sweet and heartfelt ceremony—officiated by Jesse's brother—took place under a classic chuppah, all of the couple's parents recited segments of a traditional wedding prayer, they broke a glass. In one of the most entertaining moments of the day, when Jean-Paul & Jesse were announced to be married and kissed, they received a huge cheer—not only from their guests, but also from the afternoon crowd at Parts & Labor, who were watching from across the street!
