Rebecca & Dima | Barn at Valhalla Winter Wedding
Wedding: 19 January 2019 | Posted: 25 February 2019
Winter weddings are a gamble no matter where they're held. Here in the Old North State, you usually gamble on rain, and that is precisely what happened on Rebecca & Dima's wedding day.
I should back up a bit: Dima was a groomsman in a wedding we photographed all the way back in 2015, for one of the world's sweetest couples, Devin & Kyle. Dima is from Eastern PA, which we call home, he and I are co-alumni of the University of Pittsburgh, and he and Mike are co-alumni of Duke. On even more than just these bases, we hit it off, and we were absolutely thrilled when he & Rebecca contacted us last fall to photograph their upcoming wedding. We love full circle connections like this, and we love getting to photograph multiple weddings among the same group of friends.
So: just like that long-ago day on which we actually met them, Rebecca & Dima's wedding day was full of rain. The clouds dried up enough for their ceremony to be held outside on the Barn at Valhalla's beautiful hearth deck, and the slate gray of the skies made an excellent backdrop for all the color throughout the wedding to pop: Carolina blues, in homage to Rebecca's alma mater; winter red berries, Carnations, and bow ties; sweet and perfect greenery touches everywhere you looked. The rain got right back to work sometime during the reception, allowing us to create the awesome images that close out our collection here!
So much of the day was filled with sweetness that it feels like the whole day, rain and all, just was sweet—and I didn't even get to sample all the various dessert options! (Is that dessert table epic or what?) Rebecca's mom, Gina, got to spend the day cuddling two-week-old Kinley while her parents (Rebecca's brother and sister-in-law) did wedding party duties; bridesmaid Lorelei painted almost everyone's nails while they were waiting for hair and makeup; the guys all worked together to make a fire on the hearth deck to warm Rebecca & Dima during the ceremony; Rebecca & Dima's utter joy at seeing each other for the first time glowed enough to warm us from where we stood; and so, so much more.
And lest I forget to mention it, it did snow on Rebecca & Dima's wedding day after all, courtesy of Snow My Yard, who created the perfect slippery space for the couple's first dance and the scene of several snowball fights throughout the night. We found out later that Dima lost his ring in the snow! But never fear: it was found by once-again hero bridesmaid Lorelei the next morning.
This sweet couple is clearly loved deeply by everyone around them—their 20-person wedding party is a testament to that!—and that very much includes us. We are so grateful to have been there helping to make their wedding day as awesome as we possibly could. Thank you, Rebecca & Dima, for letting us in on the fun. Enjoy a selection of our favorite images below, and congratulate them in the comments!
